Wikis

This week my class is broken up into three groups and our focus is creating a wiki.  The process has been very interesting for me since this is my first attempt at creating a wiki and doing group work in the internet.  I have been wondering what I could do with first graders and a Wiki?  I have decided to do an internet search for other wikis that are out there.

Another 1st grade wiki

So I searched the internet and I found some pretty interesting sites. It seems the limits to working with first graders and wikis are endless! I am so excited! One site I visited was from a first grade class in Canada! How cool is that! I cannot wait until Spring Break is over (yeah I said it) so I can apply what I have learned to my actual classroom. Here is the link I visited.

Very Ambitious

Your excitement is contagious. I wouldn't have thought to do a Wiki with first graders, but after you mentioned it, it seemed to me like it would be a great way to help get students interested in writing. I took a look at the page you visited and was very impressed. It hadn't dawned on me that the wiki would be open to anyone to help edit. I had imagined a wiki in a more controlled setting where perhaps only the class and staff could edit. It must be exciting to see the changes that are being made by potentially complete strangers.

Now this bit of caution could be because I had some cyber-bullying training last night, but it would seem that if someone where to open a classroom wiki to the internet, they would have to be very vigilant about monitoring it. Not that people would vandalize the site, but it would seem possible. It seems to be a difficult decision between the costs of vigilance and freedom, and safety o security. I'm sure there is a happy medium in there.
