Summer Reading Lists

Do you believe that the use of Internet Blogs by students and teachers could be an effective way to administer Summer Reading Lists?

If so, how?

If not, why not?

I think that's a great idea. I have elementary students who like to spend time on MySpace by 3rd grade, maybe earlier. I believe as 21st century teachers, we have an obligation to guiding students to appropriate, engaging, educational uses of technology, especially in the summer when some students let their brains go.

In addition to creating a blog with summer reading lists, students might enjoy the opportunity to recommend books to one another (that would build community over the summer too), or participate in a book club. Taking care of this blog on your own might be a pain, especially to verify that everything is appropriate. However, you can send your students to sites that allow them to read and write book reviews and recommendations at sites like: www.kidsrecommendbooks.com. Or sites that allow students to engage with a book group; I haven’t found any of those. And sites that have reviews and a reading community: http://www.bookdivas.com/ and http://www.teenreads.com.

I guess the trick would be to hook them during the school year.
